Engaging with INTERPOL on Policy aspects

20 Apr 2026 | Current and future initiatives International Co-operation WG, INTERPOL

The INTERPOL WG seeks to engage with INTERPOL on policy matters to advance dialogue on transparency, fairness, and human rights safeguards.
The ECBA has contributed to INTERPOL’s transparency efforts via various statements (HR Committee writes to Interpol – May 2018 and ECBA Statement calling the Interpol to reaffirm its commitment to uphold human rights standards – November 2024).

Most recently, the Group provided input to INTERPOL’s Committee on the Processing of Data (CPD) in October 2025, seeking stronger safeguards and accountability. Key policy concerns include the handling of pre-emptive requests, diffusion-system abuse, recognition of extradition decisions, and seeking to improve the refugee policy.

Procedural topics address confidentiality in challenging notices, resolving significant decision-making delays, ensuring disclosure of all relevant information, and refining the revision process. The WG seeks to promote stronger safeguards and support continued improvement in INTERPOL’s governing practices.
