ECBA Meets ECtHR on Case Processing and Expansion

20 Mar 2026 | Fair Trial Standards, Human Rights Committee

On Friday, 20 March 2026, European Criminal Bar Association Chair Vânia Costa Ramos and Human Rights Officer Alexis Anagnostakis attended the @ECtHR Meeting with NGOs and Litigators in #Strasbourg.

A substantive and forward-looking session — covering the Court’s approach to case processing, its impact strategy for systemic issues, and the upcoming expansion of the eComms platform to third-party interveners, a welcome development for counsel and civil society organisations active in Strasbourg proceedings.

One figure speaks for itself: over 1,800 third-party intervention requests granted by the Court in the past five years alone. Civil society is not on the margins of Strasbourg jurisprudence — it helps shape it.

The ECBA remains committed to that engagement. Representing the voice of criminal defence lawyers across Europe before the Court is both a privilege and a responsibility.   We look forward to continued dialogue.
