The European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA) was proud to be represented by Vice Chair Gwen Jansen – de Wolf in the #LEAP2026 Annual Conference in Athens, organised by Fair Trials.

The event gathered the #LEAP network — Fair Trials’ expert collective of defence lawyers, academics, and civil society — under the vital theme of “Humanising Criminal Justice.” The two-day programme focused on re-centring dignity and fundamental human rights at the heart of legal systems across Europe.

Gwen moderated the high-level panel: “AI in Criminal Justice: Automating Enforcement or Humanising Proceedings?” As AI and data-driven tools continue to transform investigations and cross-border cooperation, the session explored:

  • The profound impact of automated tools on procedural rights and the equality of arms.
  • The difficulties defence practitioners face when challenging opaque forms of evidence.
  • The potential for technology to reduce bias and strengthen safeguards, provided it is applied ethically and transparently.

Gwen’s expertise in cybercrime and tech-driven legal challenges provided invaluable leadership for this debate, ensuring the conversation stayed focused on the rights of the individual in an increasingly digital landscape.

The ECBA remains committed to working alongside partners like Fair Trials to ensure that as justice systems evolve, the human element remains paramount.
