Get to know our Network
What makes this network special is not only the outstanding legal minds from across Europe, but the way they work together: collegially, openly, and united by a shared commitment to the rule of law. In this interview series, we take a closer look at the people behind this network.
- Our network often operates in real time: a question is raised, and shortly afterwards the right person steps forward. If you were that person: who are you, which country are you based in, in which area of criminal law do you specialise and what are you particularly passionate about in your professional work?
I am a Belgian criminal defence lawyer based in Brussels, with a practice focused on criminal law with a strong European and International dimension. I work fluently in English, French and Dutch (Flemish), which allows me to act efficiently in multilingual and cross-border proceedings.
I handle cases involving international judicial cooperation, including European Arrest Warrants, extradition proceedings, mutual legal assistance requests, and Interpol-related matters. My work often calls for swift and carefully calibrated legal responses in situations where different legal systems, procedural traditions and enforcement cultures meet.
What matters most to me in my professional work is a pragmatic and procedure-driven approach to criminal law, shaped by a strong multicultural perspective. I am particularly engaged in cases where individuals find themselves facing criminal proceedings far from their home country, often in unfamiliar legal and cultural environments. In such situations, combining efficiency, clarity and a hands-on understanding of criminal procedure is essential to ensure that their rights are protected in a concrete and meaningful way.
- Many experience this network not only as highly professional, but also as remarkably human, shaped by trust, friendship and a shared commitment to the rule of law in Europe. If we take a step beyond your professional role, what should we know about you as a person to understand why you are so keen to be part of this network?
Through the organisation, I have had the opportunity to collaborate closely with colleagues across national borders. It is energising and empowering that, despite our different legal systems, we often face the same challenges, and that we can genuinely support one another in addressing them.
This cross-border dialogue is not only intellectually stimulating, it also brings very concrete added value to my day-to-day practice in Belgium. It encourages me to question routines, to rethink certain reflexes, and ultimately to grow as a lawyer.
On a more personal note, I see myself as someone with a strong core, driven by ambition, creativity and bold ideas, while remaining warm, approachable and attentive to others. I value connecting people and nurturing an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect. I am convinced that this balance between strength and humanity is essential when building a meaningful professional community.
- If a colleague were to ask you whether this network is truly worth joining, what would you say from your own experience? What makes it so special for you?
Beyond its professional value, there is also a genuine human dimension to the network. Over time, I have not only found trusted colleagues here, but also built real friendships. That combination of professional excellence and personal connection creates a level of confidence that is invaluable in cross-border criminal practice.
- Finally, looking ahead: what do you hope for the future of the ECBA, and what contribution would you personally like to make?
Looking ahead, I hope the organisation will continue to strengthen its role as a trusted European platform for criminal defence lawyers, promoting cooperation while firmly safeguarding fundamental rights and the rule of law.
Personally, I would like to contribute by actively sharing my experience from Belgian criminal practice, engaging in cross-border exchanges, and supporting colleagues whenever thoughtful and timely input is needed. I am also keen to take part in initiatives that encourage innovation, mentorship and long-term collaboration within the network.
I very much look forward to contributing to this collective endeavour and to being part of the organisation’s continued development.
