Get to know our Network

What makes this network special is not only the outstanding legal minds from across Europe, but the way they work together: collegially, openly, and united by a shared commitment to the rule of law. In this interview series, we take a closer look at the people behind this network.

  1. Our network often operates in real time: a question is raised, and shortly afterwards the right person steps forward. If you were that person: who are you, which country are you based in, in which area of criminal law do you specialise and what are you particularly passionate about in your professional work?

I am a partner at Hickman & Rose – a boutique litigation firm in London dedicated to solving criminal, regulatory, and civil law issues arising out of the criminal justice system. Running through all our work is the determination to hold the state to account.

Alongside ECBA members Jenny Wiltshire & Rosa Commander, I am a partner in the market leading serious and general crime team. I specialise in acting for those accused of a broad spectrum of criminal offences: from homicide and other violent offences to serious sexual assaults, drugs, communications, and motoring offences.  I have a strong reputation for representing professionals, high-profile and High Net Worth individuals for whom any suggestion that they may be connected to criminality is can be professionally and personally devastating. I also have a growing practice advising university students facing disciplinary investigations, often concerning sexual allegations, which have the potential, if not handled correctly, to develop into police investigations.

  1. Many experience this network not only as highly professional, but also as remarkably human, shaped by trust, friendship and a shared commitment to the rule of law in Europe. If we take a step beyond your professional role, what should we know about you as a person to understand why you are so keen to be part of this network?

I came to law quite late in life. After initially training as a musician – I am a trained opera singer – I embarked on a fledgling career in the Fintech industry, before re-training as and qualifying as a lawyer at 32. I would love to say that this was some higher calling, but I was seduced by a friend’s tales of her fascinating cases and decided to become a criminal lawyer. I have not looked back since.

  1. If a colleague were to ask you whether this network is truly worth joining, what would you say from your own experience? What makes it so special for you?

What I value most about the ECBA is the inclusive and non-judgmental atmosphere that enables members to participate in whichever way they chose. For me, being a member offers a bi-annual opportunity to meet old friends and new, whilst growing my network and, crucially, having fun. And when I need a lawyer in another jurisdiction, I have the best address book to chose from. This is vital for a lawyer trying to develop or maintain their practice.

  1. Finally, looking ahead: what do you hope for the future of the ECBA, and what contribution would you personally like to make?

I am certain that the ECBA will go from strength to strength under Vania’s leadership. I hope for more equality in representation from across Europe geographically, a continued increase in gender equality, and a keen commitment for finding new and interesting places to meet. As I entre my fifth decade, I hope I will have the stamina to keep up with my younger colleagues.
